GEO: The New Discipline Every SEO Needs to Understand in 2026

A year ago, most people in SEO had not heard of GEO. Today it is one of the most talked about topics in the field, and for good reason.

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. In plain terms, it is the practice of making your content visible and citable in AI-generated answers from tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google’s AI Overviews, and others.

It is different from traditional SEO, but it builds on the same foundation. If you understand why SEO works, you will pick up GEO quickly.

Why GEO Exists

Search behaviour has shifted. A growing number of people, especially for research and question-based queries, are going to AI tools instead of typing into Google.

Instead of searching “how to improve website speed” and browsing ten blue links, they are asking ChatGPT directly and reading the response. Instead of comparing hosting providers on Google, they are asking Perplexity to summarise the differences.

This is not replacing search completely. But it is taking a chunk of it, particularly at the top of the funnel where people are exploring topics and forming opinions.

If your content does not show up in those AI responses, you are invisible to that segment of users. That is what GEO is trying to solve.

How AI Tools Decide What to Cite

AI language models like ChatGPT are trained on large amounts of text from the internet. The content they generate reflects patterns from that training data. When they cite sources, they tend to pull from pages that are authoritative, clear, and directly relevant to the query.

The factors that seem to matter most are clarity of writing, authoritative sources and citations, question and answer structure, topical depth, and brand mentions across the web.

Content that directly asks and answers questions is easier for AI to extract. Using headers as questions helps the model identify what your content is about. A single page that covers a topic thoroughly is more likely to be cited than a surface-level piece.

What GEO Actually Looks Like in Practice

You do not need a completely different content strategy. Most of what works for GEO works for SEO too. The difference is in emphasis.

Use clear, descriptive headings. State your main point in the first sentence of each section. Include specific examples. Add original perspectives. Build your online presence broadly by publishing on LinkedIn, contributing to industry discussions, and getting mentioned in other publications.

What GEO Will Not Fix

GEO is not a magic traffic switch. If your content is thin, poorly researched, or copies what everyone else is saying, no amount of structural optimisation will make AI systems choose your content over better alternatives.

The foundation is still content quality. GEO just adds a layer of intentional formatting and positioning on top of that.

Where to Start

Pick your five best existing articles. Ask yourself: if an AI tool was asked about this topic, would it find my article useful and easy to extract from? If the answer is no, update those articles. Make the structure cleaner. Add more specific information. State your key points more directly.

It does not require a complete rethink. It requires a sharper approach to writing. And in a world where AI is increasingly the first stop for information, that sharpness is what separates content that gets seen from content that does not.
